Great article James! I wanted to add one point: mobile apps on cell phones (iPhone): An easy way people can attempt to protect their privacy is not syncing their Facebook mobile iPhone application with their contacts.

The value Facebook provides in return for stealing your whole address book and linking it to your Facebook account is that you can pull photos, info, profile links from FB and import them into your addressbook. More of a gimmick in my opinion, but it explains the "People You May Know" offline friends suggestions --those people you always wondered how they got there when you've never spoken online.
