The CAA’s “Little Green Men” Advert

I recently told you the eBay Mole story. Here’s another tale from the archives. It features one of Canada’s oldest companies - the CAA. This was an interesting assignment because it was a time sensitive pilot project to prove a point. It ran a few weeks before Christmas (a bad time for general ads) but those were the rules.

Multi-Step with a Twist

So I developed a 3 step plan which included a print advert that ran in multiple local newspapers (see below) which in turn drove traffic to the CAA’s special website, which in turn drove people in to the retail stores. The twist was I had to design an advert that appealed to all 577 dealers and one they’d all accept without question.

Best Response in 100 Years

The CAA told me later this little advert generated the most responses they’d gotten from any of their advertising in a century (yup… 100 years!) Would you like to see the advert? Here it is…

eBay and the Mole

eBay once thought they had a mole when I told them about an Internet Marketing idea I’d developed. I guess I should give you some background first… A few years ago I was doing some writing for a magazine and, I’d written about using eBay as a marketing tool. eBay heard about my work, liked my approach and called me in for a meeting.

During that meeting, eBay gave me the grand tour (yes they really do have offices!) and I met some really neat people. Their coffee and snack lounge is amazing… Good to know where our pennies go.

Anyway, part of my meeting included an exchange of information, so I told them more about my marketing ideas and that’s when they reacted surprised. It would seem an idea I’d been developing was also strikingly similar to an idea they had been secretly developing and to say they were shocked was putting it lightly.

Anyway, after I’d assured them I was not a spy and I had the notebooks to prove my thinking – things got back on track. I suppose you want to know the essence of that idea huh?

OK, here it is…

Yesterday I promised to upload a schematic that showed the Anatomy of an Automated Sales Process, and true to my word I uploaded it to the member area.

In fact, while I was doing that, I found a couple of other cool eBooks I wanted to share and those have been uploaded too.

Also, we’ve changed the look of the member area to a clean white tabbed design. See what you think. And the downloads area now shows a little arrow next to the file link indicating whether you’ve downloaded it or not - helpful to spot new content.

Members Only Premium Content Now Available

Since I began JamesBurchill.com the public content on my website has been free - and I hasten to add - will remain so. However, I’ve been wrestling with a problem since the beginning: how do I offer ‘premium content’ and value-add materials without having to charge every time for everything?

The answer was a members only area where I publish all this premium content and make it available for one low monthly fee - a fraction of what it would cost if you subscribed or purchased individually. And before you ‘tune me out’ - stay with me for a moment longer because I think you’ll find it worth it.

“Stop Complaining - Do Something About It…”

Pretty rough advice I thought when I overheard two friends talking about gas prices last night. You see, at midnight last night in Ontario, the price of gas jumped 12 cents a litre!

That’s an additional $12 a tank for anyone driving a half decent sized family or utility vehicle. The lineups at the pump, for those folks trying to beat the midnight price-hike, were crazy. People were angry and frankly who can blame them, the price of gas is terribly high.

However, instead of sitting in a lineup wasting time and waiting ages to save a few bucks on one fill up, why not take one simple action that will save you dollars EVERY TIME YOU FILL UP? It’s not going to fix the price of gas, however it will SAVE YOU MONEY AT THE PUMP. I’ve shared this with you before, and here it is again:
