IBM’s UC Jam

On the 22nd of July, I participated in IBM’s “UC Jam” as part of UC in Canada’s ongoing discussion regarding the current and future landscape for Unified Communications.

There were six UC experts in an IBM boardroom in Toronto, and one connected via videoconferencing from Ottawa. It was a fascinating few hours and the lively discussions covered subjects from the definition of UC through to selecting a suitable UC vendor/partner and the pitfalls to avoid along the way.

Beyond the inevitable peer pressure *grin* was the added incentive to not look like a complete doofus because the event was being filmed for later publication. The shoot is in post production at the moment, and as I get more information I’ll share it, in the mean time I thought you might like to read the UCinCanada interview that preceded the ‘main event.’ I think you’ll find it enlightening.

iPhone Developer Wanted

WANTED: iPhone Developers

Much of what we do here at JamesBurchill.com and jbpartners.net is all about marketing and communications. We help our clients express themselves online (and off) so they can sell more of their products and services.

Our preferred “weapon of choice” is what we call ‘expressive’ or ‘articulated’ technology. Why this? Because (a) I have more than 20 years direct experience using technology to empower and grow businesses, (b) because the Internet is a technology platform and it permeates all aspects of our lives, and finally (c) because, frankly, technology applied properly is just plain cool and myself and my team really get a kick out of seeing it “done right.”

Which is why I have a requirement that needs the special skills of one or more iPhone Developers. If you are a company that develops iPhone platform software, or an individual (I have no preference at this stage) drop me an email and introduce yourself. There are a couple of projects being considered that would require your special skills.

Google recently enabled user rating and reviews. Now a happy customer can type a shining review about your business before they even get the check! Of course… if you do something ‘bad’ to upset them - they can flame you faster than a forest fire! And by all accounts, Google includes the feedback immediately in the search results.

SMM Strategy

Social Media Marketing

Many a company has forgotten the old maxim, “Act in haste, repent at your leisure…”

The same warning should be applied to companies rushing to get in on the social media marketing wave.

If you hear things at work like “We should have a blog,” or “Let’s join Facebook,” I suggest [respectfully] that maybe you are about to make a whopper of a mistake.

Here’s why…

Dance 2008: Where The Hell is Matt?

Dance 2008: Where The Hell is Matt?

Dancing 2008: It started as a lark, a goof, a joke, but this video (created by Matt Harding) is nothing of the sort. It’s now a bona fide feel good, shot-in-the-arm dose of hope and inspiration. At 4m29s in duration, the haunting sound track and video collage of Matt Harding dancing his goofy jig around the world has touched a chord and the hearts of millions.

This wasn’t what I’d planned to write today, but after sipping my morning coffee and watching this video (thanks to Ken for sending me the link) I felt I should share it too. Not so much for it’s artistic merit - but for the impact and implications I see. Consider this…

SEO permalinksRemapping Your URL and Safeguarding Your SEO

In the last article I discussed the merits of actively designing your website URL to support SEO. At the end of the article I promised to explain how we can change or remap the URL and how we can do this to avoid losing our search engine ranking

Since the focus of this article is to show you how to do things right, I will not explain how to use the 404 not found page, or the less than helpful “We’ve moved” redirection pages. Nope, I’m going to go straight to the heart of the matter…

SEO URL Design for the Perfect Pretty Permalink

SEO permalinksSuccessful SEO and Internet Marketing is always in the details, so what has the design of your URL got to do with anything? A heck of a lot actually… But first I should begin by explaining what a permalink is.

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual weblog posts, as well as categories and other lists of weblog postings. A permalink is what another blogger will use to refer to your article (or section), or how you might send a link to your story in an e-mail message. Because others may link to your individual postings, the URL to that article shouldn’t change. Permalinks are intended to be permanent and in a perfect world, pretty…

sitemapNavigating a website can be challenging at best. If you’re a regular to a site like mine, you’re probably figured out how to ‘get around.’ But what if you’re new?

If this web site was a book then you could flick to the Table of Contents and easily find what you seek. The good news is that this site DOES have a table of contents, it’s called a SITEMAP and it’s available from every page on this site.
