The Winner of the 2008 Darwin Awards Goes To…
Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt ( Paderborn, Germany) who fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded. The sheer force of the elephant’s unexpected defecation knocked Mr. Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves… ‘S**t happens’
It’s a Wonderful Servant But a Terrible Master
Technology. This wonder of wonders makes my life immeasurably easier for the most part. But when it fails, it fails me spectacularly. And the one technology we rely on very heavily is EMAIL.
And mine has been doing some very odd things since early December 2007. Last night at a business meeting I was approached by two associates who asked me what was wrong with my email - apparently at two times that same day, my email server decided (arbitrarily it would seem) to simply reject their email.
I’m sure the server had it’s reasons, it might not have liked the tone, the source, the time, the weather… I don’t know, and I don’t care. What I do care is that for no good reason - or at least a reason I know of - email gets nixxed.
So after doing some research I’m trying an experiment. Today I altered all the routing of all my email accounts through Google’s gmail servers. Considered by many to be ‘da bomb’ when it comes to properly handling email, I will wait and see.
And NO, my email addresses have not changed, everything is still valid - it’s just the routing that’s been tweaked. Hopefully I will resolve the “m.i.a” emails and the added benefit of storage, searching, routing, remote access and other great Googly things , will outweigh the aggravation I’ve suffered at the hands of the errant email gremlins.
And if you sent me email in the last 2 months and got an uncharacteristically quiet response - then perhaps your email was lost too. Thank goodness we still have carrier pigeons… and you thought dial-up was slow!
Are You The Bootleggers Next Victim?
Filed under: Internet Marketing, Rants and Raves, Strategic Content
Ensuring someone doesn’t pirate or “rip you off” online is a little tricky. Copying a file and sharing it with your friends is easy as ‘point and click’, so how do you keep from becoming the bootleggers next victim?
There are services that look for content finger-prints (each writer has a unique way of writing, and many books have unique phraseology too) but unless each book/article/report etc is entered into the system for comparison it’s a bit tough to check.
Truthfully, copyright violation is a pain in the *ss but it’s commonplace as you know. Protecting websites and other digital products is a little easier because there are special services for just this, but bottom line… due diligence is your main weapon.
Of course it never hurts to do what I do - use technology to ‘watch the skies’ - or in this case, the Internet. Using free services to scour the search indexes, the networks and the databases to find out if your work has bee duped by another is not terribly hard.
Each day I get emails monitoring most (if not all) my work. I can see where it has been published, and more importantly who is claiming authorship. Yes, there are some scoundrels out there who change my name for theirs - and nothing else! A strong ‘cease and desist’ letter usually does the trick. Most of the time these con-men (and women) seem greatly shocked I found them. Ain’t technology grand!
In conclusion, ‘They‘ say copying is flattery at its highest… I say it’s copyright violation and basic theft - but I’m English and we have odd ideas I guess.
Not Burlington Iowa, Burlington Ontario!
Funny how things play out. Since I live in Burlington and work in and around the area, I am often surfing and searching for all things Burlington. I check out the Burlington Chamber of Commerce (of which I am a member), I check out the major Burlington sites and sounds and since I write and publish a few of my own Burlington focused e-magazines, I am always hunting for more ways to spread the word.
So you can imagine my amusement when I see a shift in the search traffic patterns surrounding certain key phrases and words - specifically those pertaining to Burlington Iowa. Of course, the recent furor in the USA is responsible for this shift and rather than fight it I figured I surf it. So here you are, an article all about Burlington Ontario - not Burlington Iowa.
And for all you SEO and SEM junkies… YES, I know what I just did. *LOL*
