Technology & Computing Uses - Technology Coaching

Technology & computing uses abound and when used properly make for a wonderful servant. When abused, technology becomes a terrible master. Consider this: at no other point in recorded history have we ever been more dependent on technology and computing uses.

For many, this level of dependency is a little unsettling and for those, who are not quite full-blown technophobic, the very thought of developing a sales presentation or a monthly budgeting spreadsheet, or something as apparently banal as sending an email to a group while privately copying others, is quite a challenge. So why am I discussing this today?

IBM’s UC Jam

On the 22nd of July, I participated in IBM’s “UC Jam” as part of UC in Canada’s ongoing discussion regarding the current and future landscape for Unified Communications.

There were six UC experts in an IBM boardroom in Toronto, and one connected via videoconferencing from Ottawa. It was a fascinating few hours and the lively discussions covered subjects from the definition of UC through to selecting a suitable UC vendor/partner and the pitfalls to avoid along the way.

Beyond the inevitable peer pressure *grin* was the added incentive to not look like a complete doofus because the event was being filmed for later publication. The shoot is in post production at the moment, and as I get more information I’ll share it, in the mean time I thought you might like to read the UCinCanada interview that preceded the ‘main event.’ I think you’ll find it enlightening.

iPhone Developer Wanted

WANTED: iPhone Developers

Much of what we do here at JamesBurchill.com and jbpartners.net is all about marketing and communications. We help our clients express themselves online (and off) so they can sell more of their products and services.

Our preferred “weapon of choice” is what we call ‘expressive’ or ‘articulated’ technology. Why this? Because (a) I have more than 20 years direct experience using technology to empower and grow businesses, (b) because the Internet is a technology platform and it permeates all aspects of our lives, and finally (c) because, frankly, technology applied properly is just plain cool and myself and my team really get a kick out of seeing it “done right.”

Which is why I have a requirement that needs the special skills of one or more iPhone Developers. If you are a company that develops iPhone platform software, or an individual (I have no preference at this stage) drop me an email and introduce yourself. There are a couple of projects being considered that would require your special skills.

An Article a Day Brings Big Business Your Way!

calendarWhen I consult with businesses, they all ask me similar questions and a very popular one goes something like this, “James, how do we get more people to visit our website - and while you’re at it, how do we rank better with the search engines?”

I smile confidently (pausing for dramatic effect) and say…

semLately it seems I’ve been explaining to more and more people about Internet Marketing. You see, for some reason folks think that IM (Internet Marketing) is really all about putting up a great looking website. It’s not – it’s so much more than that.

In fact, although a website is a crucial piece in the online marketing puzzle, you can still beat the best-looking website with great online marketing. And what still surprises me is after all the education, al the articles, all the proof, people still think, “If you build it (better) they will come!”

Sorry to disappoint folks – but that’s a dangerous assumption.

What I’ve been asked — more than a few times lately — is “How can I use this social media platform to market my business?” Here’s a few simple, yet powerful ways to put the power of Twitter to work for you:

There’s No Time… Like The Present. Begin Now.

Recently I wrote that Google appears to favour mature websites over young websites, and when it comes to relationships, maturity and tenure are two keys to the vault we call trust. Without trust we will not buy, and trust takes time to build and earn. I was researching another topic when I came across a post by Seth Godin that touched on this topic and here’s what Seth said:

“The best time to look for a job next year is right now. The best time to plan for a sale in three years is right now. The mistake so many marketers make is that they conjoin the urgency of making another sale with the timing to earn the right to make that sale. In other words, you must build trust before you need it. Building trust right when you want to make a sale is just too late.

Publishing your ideas… in books, or on a blog, or in little twits on Twitter… and doing it with patience, over time, is the best way I can think of to lay a foundation for whatever it is you hope to do next.” - Source: Seth’s Blog

I couldn’t have said it better myself.
