Don’t change your email address without planning it first. Why? Because all your hard work connecting with others immediately gets placed in jeopardy and those emails you sent (which used to get delivered OK) will now face the wrath of the spam filters unless you consider the following plan…

1,490 Spam Emails and counting…

This morning I decided to clean out my spam email box. It gets very full, very quickly. Hundreds of spam email arrive daily and are handled (for the most part) correctly by the software filters I have setup.

However on occasion it screws up and I get false positives, for instance I just found a handful of emails from friends an associates in the spam box. I wondered why.

A bit of digging and a moment later I understood why these emails were marked as spam - my friends had changed their email address. In the past I’d trained the system to permit email from them (a particular address), so when they changed their email address my spam filters started thinking this was “new” spam and blocked it.

Computers are very basic at their core (think dumb as a stump and you’d be close) and they diligently follow rules without regard. So if you are thinking of changing your email, plan it first.

Here are a few tips to avoid getting into email trouble

Let your list know you are making the change. Pick a date. Plan the switch. Announce it beforehand, tell everyone your new email address. Ask them to white-list you in advance. Make the switch an event (if you can) and tell your friends to look for a special email on the day of the switch - ideally make the special email contain something they want - pictures, music, software… that way your friends will be more inclined to look for your email. [*TIP* Your always marketing... even to your friends.]

Remember, changing your email address doesn’t have to be a problem so long as you plan. And lastly, never ever underestimate the stupidity of a computer so plan, plan, plan *grin*
