Before the Internet existed there was a business service called “clipping” and what the clipping companies did was scour the newspapers and influential publications of the time clipping content. They’d look for information you had specified (clip it out) and send it to you. This was a fantastic way to get critical information about important matters. It was leading edge for its day…

Quaint huh? Now you can do this and more for free with Google Alerts. Here’s how:

Google Alerts are email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic.

Some handy uses of Google Alerts include:

  • monitoring your name
  • monitoring your brand
  • monitoring your competitors name/brand etc
  • monitoring a developing news story in your industry

Log into your Google account and enter the search terms in the simple form (See pic. for example) and press the “Create Alert” button. That’s it, you’ll get an email when your search terms find a match. Powerful stuff when used creatively to proactively monitor your brand, your reputation and that of your competitors.
