Mobi Dick or Futuristic Prognosticator?

This dot-mobi discussion has become quite interesting. People are even quoting this blog (which is always nice) I think however that a few people are missing the point about a comment I made re “splitting the internet.”

Basically there is no technological reason for implementing a .mobi domain, in fact if you’ve spent money and resources “branding” yourself with a .com you’d be well advised not to mess with a good thing. Computers are smart enough to figure out the browser being used to ‘read’ a website and can programmatically switch the viewer to a more appropriate page.

This means if you access a website with a PDA the site can say “hey… look… a PDA is being used to browse this page. Hmmm, let’s move them to the specially created PDA friendly part of this website.” And poof, as if by magic, you are redirected to a new area on the site. Sometimes this is a subdirectory to help you “comprehend” what happened - like http://mobile.webdomain.com but it doesn’t have to be.

The domain names were meant to assign an extra level of information about the website you were visiting - some still do. But more and more they are becoming blurred by the masses, so WHY bother confusing your market with YET ANOTHER DOMAIN choice.

Enforced 10 digit dialing was a pain in the rear, and asking people to “dial another website” just because they chose to browse from their PDA versus their laptop is NOT GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. Technology is smart enough to become invisible for many solutions - this is one of them.

And who wants to maintain two sets of website bookmarks ??? NOT ME.
