Which is better: a 100% custom website or a customized “stock” solution? I’d vote for the customized stock solution over the 100% custom solution any day. And here’s why…
I have a strong aversion to Version 1 code installs. I’d rather version 2, and 3 is better - 4.5 is better still. 100% custom coding is always V1 and first generation code sucks. It’s buggy. It’s usually incomplete. It has user interface issues. The error trapping is rubbish. It locks up. It crashes. Want proof?
Think of the uproar when Microsoft releases a new (version 1) operating system. Look at the heck it’s taking over the Vista OS! Here’s the scary part, Microsoft has millions of dollars, the brightest minds and the best of the best… And still their very best Version 1 code is about as stable as a newborn deer. That’s just life, that’s the way of it.
I’ve built software solutions for more than 20 years and learned perfection was a goal not a reality - it’s simply mathematically unfeasible - too many lines of code and too many variables. Don’t believe me? Ask a mathematician about problem solution domains and “n-squared” algorithms…
So if the biggest and the best - with all those resources can’t get it right first time - what chance does a smaller outfit have? Precisely… It’s just basic math. And the last time I checked, you don’t want to be in endless revision and update hell do you?
Far better to use a system that’s already had the bugs worked out. Drop in a proven stock solution and customize it to fit your needs. And please don’t tell me “you’re special” and there’s nothing out there for you - that’s just ego talking and it will cost you dearly if you listen.
Of course you are special, but not so special that you do business any different from the rest of us: you probably sell something (services, products, time, whatever…) for money - right? In that case there’s a web solution out there for you - simple plug and play, all you have to do is “skin it” with a graphical design and presto! It’s your own solution with none of the first generation issues.
My NASCAR SEO Internet Marketing Theory
This approach is what I call the NASCAR Theory of web SEO and Internet Marketing. In NASCAR the reason you win is through driver skill, application and team work, the car (tool) is no longer the differentiator. Online, people still think the website will make you win - WRONG! It’s what you do with it that matters more. Marketing (team work) trumps it every time.
Bottom line, I work with clients and we select proven tested ‘off the shelf’ solutions and integrate them into the client mix. Then we customize the solution to meet the client needs. With this approach you get the best of both worlds: a solution that’s stable, well tested and into Version X, and the best part is you didn’t have the overhead investment required to achieve that stability!
